Up to $4,000 so a young person with a physical disability can take part in sport. Applications close the third Monday of every month.
Before you apply
The 15% contribution is not as fixed as it looks. Halberg say plainly that if it is a barrier, speak to your local Adviser. Do not let that number stop you.
What it funds is framed carefully and it is worth understanding: the additional cost of having a disability — the amount over and above what a non-disabled child or their parents would reasonably be expected to pay. Equipment, lessons or coaching including within school time, and assistance at school camp.
Aged 5 to 21, and the application is for a named young person rather than a club or a school.
Only one application can be live per person per month, and applications close the third Monday of each month with no December round. It does not fund retrospectively, so apply before you buy or enrol and leave time for the application to be prepared and assessed.
Three things to gather before you start. A quote for the item or activity. A clinical support letter confirming the primary physical impairment and that the item or activity suits. And a support letter setting out the need and the benefits, written by the recipient themselves if they are over 18, or by a parent or caregiver.
Halberg recommend connecting with your local Adviser before applying — they guide you through it and check eligibility first. Nine field staff cover the motu, most across more than one region. 0800 HALBERG or office@halberg.co.nz.
Applications are online. Decisions are made monthly by the Halberg Grants Committee, funding is discretionary and decisions are final.
Halberg also run Inclusion Training for schools and clubs, CoachMate, the Parafed network, and the Halberg Games — a national sports competition bringing regional teams together. Founded in 1963 by Sir Murray Halberg.
