Who we are

Tōku Waka is a Māori-led platform for practical information, thoughtful analysis and kaupapa that strengthen Māori participation, capability and self-determination. The funding and scholarships directory is its first service.

What this website collects

Nothing you type into the directory. There are no accounts and no contact forms. Your searches and filter choices happen inside your own browser. They are never sent anywhere. The one thing you can give us is your email address, if you choose to join the pānui.

Server logs

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any host, it keeps standard technical logs. Those usually record your IP address, the time of the request, which page was served and general browser information. The logs exist to keep the site running and secure. They aren't used to identify anyone or combined with anything else.

Fonts

The typefaces come from Google Fonts. Loading them means your browser contacts Google's servers, which will see your IP address. Google states it doesn't use Google Fonts requests to build advertising profiles. A content blocker will stop the request if you'd rather it didn't happen. The site still works. It just falls back to your device's own fonts.

Cookies and analytics

This site sets no cookies of its own. We use no analytics or tracking tools. No third party is measuring your visit.

The pānui

If you sign up we collect your email address, and your name if you give one. We use it to send the pānui: a short update when new funding goes up and when major rounds are closing. Nothing else. We don't send advertising and we never pass your address to anyone for their own use.

Our mailing list is managed by MailerLite. Your address is stored on their systems, which are located overseas. We chose a provider that applies privacy protections comparable to New Zealand's, as required by the Privacy Act 2020.

Every pānui carries an unsubscribe link. Use it and your address comes off the list. You can also just email and ask. We keep a record that you consented, because the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007 requires us to be able to show it.

If you email us

When you contact us we receive your email address, your name if you give it, and whatever you write. We use that to reply and to act on corrections or suggestions. We keep correspondence for as long as it stays useful for running the directory.

Contributor submissions

If you send us writing, documents, images, audio or other material, we store your contact details, the material itself, drafts and any editorial notes.

Publication is opt-in. We will not publish your submission under your name, a pen name or anonymously without first agreeing with you on the final version, how you are credited, and any sensitive details to be removed.

Please don't send sensitive personal information about yourself or anyone else unless it's necessary and you have the right to share it. If your submission contains someone else's personal information, you confirm you have consent or another lawful basis to provide it.

You can ask us to delete your submission materials at any time. Two limits apply. Material already published may stay publicly available unless we agree to take it down. We may keep minimal records where there's a legitimate editorial or legal reason.

What we don't do

We don't sell personal information. We don't share it for advertising. We don't build profiles of visitors.

Who we share with

Only where necessary: with the providers that host the site and carry our email, to protect the site or investigate suspected unlawful activity, or where the law requires it.

Links to other sites

Every listing links out to a funder's website. Once you follow one of those links you're on their site under their privacy policy. We have no control over what they collect and no visibility of it.

Security

We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from loss, misuse and unauthorised access. No online service is completely secure. We use reputable providers and keep the amount we hold small.

Access and correction

Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can ask what personal information we hold about you and ask for it to be corrected. Email kiaora@tōkuwaka.com.

If you aren't satisfied with how we handle a privacy matter, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.

Changes

If this site starts collecting more, such as a contact form, a mailing list or analytics, this page will be updated first. The date at the top will change.
