Before you apply

One of very few grants anywhere that funds tutoring for a learner who is struggling, and it reaches younger tamariki than almost anything else in this directory. The Board describe hauā ki te ako as a learner challenged in some manner, mentally or physically or otherwise.

The Board put the reasoning plainly: central to the policy is aroha ki te uri, a duty of care for Ngāti Whakaue descendants, and a duty to get an uri up and running if we can.

Monthly rather than annual, so there is always a round coming. A pilot for 2026, so check it is still running before planning around it.

Register once and it lasts. The Board use a permanent registration, and anyone who has registered for a tertiary grant since 2012 logs in rather than registering again. Do it before a round opens rather than during.

It is not fully online, and this is where people come unstuck. You complete the online form, then go back to your profile page to print a cover sheet and a whakapapa sheet. The whakapapa sheet must be verified and signed as the instructions on it require, and must clearly show your connection. Those printed documents and every attachment on the cover sheet checklist have to reach the Secretary’s office by the closing date — not just the online form. Allow for the post.

The Endowment was established in 1880 as a free gift by the people of Ngāti Whakaue for secondary education in Rotorua. It is a statutory board with charitable status.
