Before you apply

Registration is a separate step with its own earlier deadline, and missing it ends your round. Te Mātāwai say it plainly: miss the registration deadline and you cannot submit an application at all. For 2026-27 registrations opened 1 December 2025 and closed 15 February 2026 — six weeks before applications were even due. Register in December, not when you are ready to apply.

If you have registered in a previous round you do not need to register again. Check your details are current instead.

The 2026-27 round is closed. Registrations for it opened 1 December 2025; the application deadline was extended to 31 March 2026 after the summer weather events hit Mātaatua, Te Tairāwhiti, Te Tai Tokerau, Tainui, Te Arawa and Te Tai Hau-ā-uru. Expect registrations for 2027-28 to open around 1 December 2026.

You can register as an individual, or as a business, organisation, charity or trust — charitable, land, marae, iwi or whānau. But you must be registered with the New Zealand Companies Office or with Charities Services. Both of those have their own traps, listed separately here.

Requests at or above $60,000 require GST registration.

Criteria differ from kāhui to kāhui and change from time to time. Applications are assessed by the Pae Motuhake in each kāhui, who recommend to the Board. Read your own kāhui’s investment plan rather than assuming the national rules apply.

Applications go through Te Mātāpuna, the online portal. Pae Motuhake host Hui Whakamōhio around the motu to help whānau write stronger applications — worth going to. investment@tematawai.maori.nz, 04 499 8907.
