Before you apply

Earn Learn is the test, and it is broader than an apprenticeship. Cadetships and internships count too, which is not obvious from the name.

Up to $500 a year for three years, $1,500 including GST across the lot. Second and third year applicants must provide evidence of completing the previous year, so keep that paperwork.

Two things must be on file before you apply: identification — birth certificate, driver licence or passport — and bank confirmation showing the bank logo, account name and number. Sort those first rather than mid-application.

One grant application per applicant per financial year.

The current financial year is FY27, 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. Waikato-Tainui grants run on that year rather than the calendar year, and most allow one application per financial year. All of them require you to be a registered tribal member.
