Council pūtea matching 50% of marae upgrade and maintenance costs.
Before you apply
Covers the practical things — health and safety including fire and earthquake requirements, upgrading marae facilities, purchasing equipment, and maintenance of exterior carvings and tukutuku panels. Very few funders anywhere will pay for maintaining whakairo and tukutuku.
The 50% match is the constraint, so pair it with something else rather than treating it as the whole solution. Lottery Funding for Community Facilities, which replaced Oranga Marae on 1 July 2026, and Te Puni Kōkiri are the usual other half and both are listed here.
Council frame this as responding to the needs and aspirations of mana whenua with respect to marae, and as protecting culture and heritage embodied in marae facilities and relationships.
