Before you apply

There is no fund for irawhiti or takatāpui travel as such. This is the closest one that is open. It pays for projects with a specific purpose and timeframe. It will not fund “individuals or commercial activities” or “operational costs”.

The applicant has to be an organisation. The page says “we do require that the bank account for donations is in the organisation's name, not an individual's.”

Applications go through SmartyGrants at rulefoundation.smartygrants.com.au. Feedback before you submit: secretary@rulefoundation.nz.

International conference costs can be funded, capped at $3,000 per person. The page limits this to once every five years per individual and once every two years per group, and asks for 3 to 4 months' notice and a plan for sharing the knowledge back with the community.

If your group is in Tāmaki Makaurau or Te Tai Tokerau, the Rule Foundation's Foundation North Fund goes bigger and is listed separately here. The Burnett Foundation's Hononga Takatāpui Fund, which names tāngata irawhiti, is also listed here and is on hold.
