Closes
Applications up to $250 are accepted year-round. Over $250: fixed dates through the year — the next closing date is 16 October 2026, the last one listed for this year
Who can apply
The council's page has a structured "Who can apply?" field that names one answer: "Community Groups." The purpose text goes further, quoted verbatim: covers "the annual costs incurred by urupā owners/trustees in the on-going care of their urupā" — which in practice can be an individual owner or trustee rather than a formal group. The page doesn't reconcile the two; both are recorded here rather than picking one.
Whakapapa
Urupā owner or trustee, where the urupā sits on land designated a Māori reservation under Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993, on Māori freehold land, or on general freehold land in Māori ownership, within the South Taranaki District.
Amount
Annual allocation started at $15,000 in 2024–25, rising $5,000 a year to a cap of $40,000

Before you apply

Near-identical in structure to New Plymouth District Council's Manaaki Urupā Grant. Covers gateways, fences and footpaths; cleaning, repairing and restoring headstones; ground maintenance equipment; access and parking; and mowing, hedges and green waste removal. Cannot fund establishing a new urupā or multi-year projects. Unallocated funding carries over within a three-year cycle but not past its end. 0800 111 323.
