Before you apply

The 50% rule is the thing to plan around. Above $500 the Board pays no more than half of acceptable costs, up to $3,500, so a $2,000 procedure returns $1,000. Below $500 it can cover the lot, which makes smaller separate claims worth more than one large one. Over 65 here, where many iwi kaumātua grants start at 60. Registration is the gate — descent alone is not enough, and the Board states plainly that applications will only be accepted from registered iwi members. Its decision is final and no correspondence is entered into. The Board may require successful applicants to take part in iwi activities as a condition of the grant, and reserves the right to use your name and photo for publicity.
