Before you apply

Who decides matters as much as the criteria here. The funding panel is three councillors plus two representatives from Ngāti Awa and Ngāti Manawa, with a representative from the council’s Toi Kōtuia strategic Māori relationships team advising on applicants. You are not writing for a council committee alone.

Individuals and marae can both apply, which many council funds do not allow.

The four aims: improve understanding and use of te reo Māori; make te reo seen, heard, felt, spoken and valued across the district; develop resources and programmes that revitalise it; and increase opportunities for people to learn it. A wānanga reo, a signage project, a resource for kōhanga — all fit. grants@whakatane.govt.nz, 07 306 0500.
