Before you apply

The commissioning itself is not something you apply to. Māhutonga's site says “Our role is to invest in community-driven initiatives that reflect Māori aspirations, mātauranga, and mana motuhake.” and describes its approach as “Locally-led solutions, funding for impact.” It works with trusted partners, champions and navigators, and publishes no amounts or call for proposals for commissioning. The one direct route is Ka Kā te Rama, listed separately.

Check which agency covers you. Te Puni Kōkiri describes Māhutonga's area as south and east of Taupō. Māhutonga's own site lists the six sub-regions above, which include Waiariki. A group in the Bay of Plenty or Rotorua should ask both Māhutonga and Rangitāmiro which one covers it.

Whānau Ora commissioning was rebuilt from 1 July 2025. The original agencies, Te Pou Matakana, Te Pūtahitanga o Te Waipounamu and Pasifika Futures, no longer hold the contracts, and older guidance naming them is out of date. Commissioning and service delivery must now remain separate, so an agency cannot commission itself.
