Before you apply

Two things decide this one. The committee only subsidises course fees, so books, living costs and travel are out. And te reo Māori has been named a priority for the rūnanga, so tauira in Māori language study are considered a high priority. You need your iwi registration number, enrolment confirmation from your provider, an academic transcript from your previous year of study, and a bank deposit slip or bank verification. Incomplete or late applications are not considered.

The hidden one: Ngāti Toa also runs grants through the Māori Education Trust portal, and the application only appears on your MET homepage if you have listed Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira as one of your six iwi affiliations. Get that wrong and you will never see it. Every one of these needs an iwi registration number, and getting one is not instant — you submit whakapapa over three to four generations back to a Tupuna Heke and the Whakapapa Committee confirms it. Start that before a deadline, not at one. Lost your number? iwiregistrationadmin@ngatitoa.iwi.nz.
