Before you apply

The breadth is the point — a kōhanga reo tamaiti and an apprentice apply to the same scheme, so one whānau can claim across several stages in a year. Applications for scholarships, trade training and tertiary are online only; no hard copy forms. You need verified bank details, confirmation of enrolment, fees and course information from your provider, and last year’s academic results if you had a grant from them previously. The special needs stream also needs a letter from a doctor or teacher confirming the disability. Three entities fund these jointly — the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board, the Tūwharetoa Settlement Trust and the Ngāti Tūwharetoa Fisheries Charitable Trust. Being registered with any one of them can be enough, so check all three before deciding you are not eligible. Office (07) 386 8832, education@tuwharetoa.co.nz.
